DIVISION 1 HOCKEY GOALIE
Throughout my sports career I have been able to be involved in so many different things and met so many people along the way. When I was growing up I was involved in many sports such as soccer, lacrosse and hockey. I was a very athletic kid and loved being on teams. When it came down to it, I ultimately chose to stick with hockey.
I have always been a big sports fan and love all sports. Hockey has always been an integral part of my life. I learned to skate at 3 years old and started playing hockey at age 4. My cousins and brother also played hockey so I was always at the rink. Now playing hockey at the Division I level, I have achieved my ultimate goal of playing college hockey. Growing up there was girls that were older than me that went on to play NCAA hockey and I made it my goal to play there as well.
Looking back on my 4 year career as it is coming to an end, I am forever grateful for everyone that has helped me along the way. Getting to where I am today was not easy and it took a lot of hard work. I think that my coaches, trainers, and family have gotten me to where I am today. My coaches and trainers taught me everything that I know today and guided me in the right direction. My family has always been there for me and supported me through every stage of my career. Someone that I have looked up to is the McQuigge sisters. They were 3 sisters that I played with growing up and they were able to reach the highest levels of hockey being that two of them played for Team Canada, 2 of them have played in the Professional Women’s hockey league and all of them have played NCAA hockey.
I would say that a big challenge that I faced was my hip injury. Coming into college, I had never really had an injury that had taken me out or needed extra attention. During my freshman year, I tore my hip labrum and would need surgery to fix it. I had to make a decision if I wanted to get the surgery or continue to play through pain. I ultimately made the decision to get surgery after my sophomore season. Everything went very smoothly but it was so hard to watch my teammates go through spring training and not be able to be alongside them doing it. Looking back it was a great decision but coming back took a lot of strength.
One of my biggest achievements was being invited to the Team Canada U18 summer camp. Being able to be recognized by my home country for my play was amazing. Another achievement was being able to travel to Japan to play their national team alongside the best girls in the province of Ontario at the time. It was a life changing experience and one that I will cherish forever. I hope to continue playing hockey after college and to play in the Professional Women’s Hockey League. I believe that women's sports is just about to take off. There are so many different professional leagues for so many sports that are being formed.
I hope to see the support of these leagues continue to grow and the leagues thrive like the male leagues do. I know that hockey will have to come to and end at some point so I hope to continue to work in the sports community. My dream job would be to be involved in the finances of a professional sports team.
